Description
HEIDENHAIN TNC - Drive system and control of CNC machine
This is a servo power module and power supply module from a modular drive system, as is often found in
Milling machines with HEIDENHAIN CNC controls (e.g. TNC series)
1. Power supply module – HEIDENHAIN UVR 150
Type: UVR 150
Function: Power supply unit for the entire drive system.
Tasks
• Conversion of the mains voltage (3-phase AC) to an intermediate DC link voltage.
• Power supply of the axis drives and spindle amplifiers.
• Monitoring of network faults, voltage and system status.
Important connections
• U / V / W
→ Input for three-phase mains supply
• PE (grounding conductor)
→ Grounding
• Intermediary circuit / DC bus
→ Power supply of the following servo modules
2. Status and Interface Module (Ready / Power / Reset)
Right next to the power supply there is a diagnostic and interface area.
Display
LED display for:
• READY
• POWER RESET
• POWER FAILURE
• DC-LINK
• AC-FAIL
• IN RESET
3. Axle amplifier – HEIDENHAIN UM-series
The middle modules are servo power amplifiers for the CNC axes.
Identifiable are:
• UM 112D (Axis X)
• UM 122D (Axis Y)
• additional module for MG / motor group or spindle
These modules drive the servo motors of the machine.
4. Spindle- / motor power module (MG)
On the right is a motor group or spindle amplifier.
Tasks
• Control of the machine's main spindle
• Speed and torque control
characteristics
• higher performance than axle booster
• separate motor connections
• Integration into the same DC intermediary circuit
5th intermediate busbar
In the lower area, there is a copper busbar (DC bus) visible.
Function
• distributes the intermediate circuit voltage from the power supply
• provides all amplifiers with power
Advantages
• compact installation
• low line losses
• high current capacity
6. MC422C – CNC main computer / control computer
The MC422C is the central computer of the CNC control system. It handles the processing of the CNC program and coordinates
all axes and drives of the machine.
Main functions
• Processing of CNC programs (DIN/ISO or clear text)
• Calculation of the interpolation movements of the axes
• Control of PLC logic and machine functions
• Communication with control panel and drive system.
Important technical data
• CPU: Intel Pentium III ~800 MHz
• RAM: about 512 MB RAM
• Interfaces:
• RS232 / RS422
• Ethernet / USB
• Profibus Fieldbus
• Analog inputs: ±10 V
• Anschluss for TFT display (XGA 1024×768).

7. UM112D – Servo power module (1-axis)
The UM112D is a high-performance servo amplifier for a single CNC axis.
Task
• Conversion of the DC intermediate bus voltage into a regulated 3-phase motor current
• precise control of torque, speed and position
characteristics
• 1-Axis performance amplifier
• typical motor power: up to about 10 kW
• Power range about 34 A / 25 A (depending on variant).
⸻
8. UM111BD – Servo power module (older generation)
The UM111BD is a single-axis servo power amplifier, similar to the UM112D, but from an older
Equipment generation.
Functions
• Control of a servo motor
• Regulation of:
• RPM
• Torque
• Position
These modules belong to the UM-series of single-axis power modules for servo drives.
⸻
9. UP110 – Control and Interface Module
The UP110 is a supply or interface module within the CNC system.
Tasks
• Supply of control electronics and signal assemblies
• Interface between:
• CNC calculator
• Servo drives
• I/O of the machine
